Having worked in ecological consultancy since 2002, Simon is a Full member of the Charter Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) and holds survey licences for great crested newt, bats (roost visitor and bat low impact (BLIMP)), Schedule 1 Birds and otter.
Simon has been a named agent or licence lead on several development licences including project licences for badger, otter, bats and red squirrel.
Simon has worked in many construction sectors including linear infrastructure (rail and roads), renewables (onshore wind and export cable) and transmission, housing and industrial projects.
Services have ranged from Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA) and ecological constraint and opportunity reports to input into Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA).
With a greater focus on Biodiversity Net Gain, Simon has had experience in completing Net Gain Assessments and providing advice to clients on habitat enhancement and management plans.
Simon is an experienced Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) working with clients and contractors to help deliver their project environmental commitments and provide advice and support on ecological and environmental issues. Simon has worked both as sole ECoW and with as team manager of ecologists and environmental specialists working on significant infrastructure projects.
Ecological licencing has been an important part of the support services provided by Simon for a number of years. Simon has successfully secured many ecological licences for bats, badger, otter and red squirrel once all other avenues of avoidance have been exhausted.Simon understands the need for robust and detailed species protection plans which support any licence application and mitigation design to ensure that the favorable conservation status is maintained.

Simon currently holds and NatureScot Bat Low Impact Licence (BLIMP) that allows the disturbance or destruction of certain roost sites, with mitigation, without the need to apply for a licence in the traditional way. This has helped clients in certain situations to keep projects or works on schedule with a clear pathway and timetable to completion.
